مکانیسم بسته‌بندی که کروموزوم‌ها را به یک میلیونیم اندازه آن‌ها بدون درهم تنیدگی متراکم می‌کند و ساختار سه بعدی که این امکان را می‌دهد، بیش از نیم قرن است که محققان را متحیر کرده است. با این حال، مشاهده کروموزوم ها در حالت طبیعی دشوار بود. محققان مجبور شدند فقط اجزای خاصی از کروموزوم ها را بیابند یا حالت متراکم آن ها را از بررسی وضعیت بدون پیچش آن ها استنتاج کنند.

از طریق این مطالعه، تیم تحقیقاتی تایید کرد که کروموزوم‌ها در ساختار فراکتالی و نه در ساختار سلسله مراتبی که در مطالعات قبلی نشان داده شده بود، تشکیل شده‌اند. علاوه بر این، یک مدل فیزیکی که فرآیند بسته بندی کروموزوم را نشان می دهد ارائه شد.

پروفسور Changyong Song توضیح داد: با استفاده از پرتوهای سنکروترون منسجم پرتو ایکس، ما ساختار سه بعدی کروموزوم ها را با استفاده از تصاویر با وضوح بالا در مقیاس نانومتری شناسایی کردیم. فناوری توسعه‌یافته در این مطالعه نه تنها کلید درک ژنتیک – جوهر همه موجودات زنده – را فراهم می‌کند، بلکه ساختارهای سه‌بعدی مواد دیگر مانند ویروس‌ها را نیز کشف می‌کند که ساختار دقیق آنها مهم است.

این مطالعه با حمایت برنامه پژوهشگر میان مدت شغلی، برنامه مرکز تحقیقات (SRC) و برنامه تحقیقات مشترک بین المللی بنیاد تحقیقات ملی انجام شد.
